I made a mixtape for Lachlan as a sort of intro to Vancouver’s indie music scene [from my point of view]. Feel free to check it out too. Download it here.

This song keeps popping into my head in the best sort of way. Also, I feel kinda weird every time I go to The Boulevard and the drummer makes my drink; I feel like I should say, “Hey, I dig your music” or something along those lines, but heck, I’m too shy for that shit.
More free music in Vancouver! KHATSAHLANO! The West 4th Music + Art Street Festival will take place July 23 and feature Yukon Blonde, Aidan Knight, Sun Wizard, Veda Hille, David Vertesi, Louise Burns and many more acts. Click through the poster for more detailed info, as well as the RSVP.
What a great line up of local talent - I also hope to catch Mode Moderne, The Shilohs, My Friend Wallis, Hot Panda, & Kingdom Cloud.
I bought it a year ago and am finally making my way through it. A non-fiction collection of essays by comedian Charles Demers, it’s hilarious but strikes some good discussion points alongside black and white photographs. I’m only halfway through but I recommend it to both Vancouver natives and visitors to the city I love so much.
I was reading about that now world famous riot “kissing photo” in the Guardian, where Douglas Haddow wrote: “The irony here is that Vancouver has at last produced an iconic image that rivals those of Paris and New York, but it needed to shatter its own fantasy to do so.” While that’s a nice little and well deserved dig at Vancouver, Haddow’s not entirely correct, at least not if we include New Westminster as part of Vancouver.
This photo, captured by Province photographer Claud Detloff, went the 1940 equivalent of “viral,” meaning it was featured in Life Magazine, then Liberty, Time, Newsweek, and innumerable newspapers and other publications. There may be more famous Canadian photos, such as Yousuf Karsh’s curmudgeonly portrait of Winston Churchill (which made the front cover of Life), but this one is certainly iconic, and undoubtedly the most famous photographic image to come out of this neck of the woods. (Until now?) For more info, see what Chuck Davis wrote on the subject.
Heroes are made on nights like tonight. My best boys. SO CLUTCH. Vancouver is going crazy tonight. #3venge complete. Bring on the Nashville Predators…welcome to Vancouver and the playoffs in Canada. I sincerely hope you are ready for this.
